Emergency numbers
Police, ambulance and fire: 112. Fire brigade direct: 114. These work from any phone in Tanzania, including without credit.
Zanzibar is safe by most standards, and the overwhelming majority of visitors never need this page. If something is stolen and you need a report for your insurer, you have to file it in person at a station, and the insurer will want the paperwork.

Staying out of trouble
- Agree every taxi fare before you get in. Almost every dispute we hear about starts with this.
- Use registered taxis after dark rather than walking Stone Town alone. The alleys are unlit and easy to get lost in.
- Zanzibar is majority Muslim. Beachwear is fine on the beach and in resorts; in Stone Town and the villages, cover shoulders and knees.
- Keep a photograph of your passport on your phone and the passport itself in the hotel safe.
