Buggy Adventure, South Zanzibar

The buggy runs inland rather than along the sand, through palm groves, banana plantations and the villages behind the coast. It is dusty, loud and the part of Zanzibar most visitors never see.

You drive yourself in a two-seat buggy with a guide leading the route. No licence is required and the tracks are slow going rather than technical, so it suits anyone who can steer.

Stops usually include a village and a viewpoint, and children wave at the noise the whole way. Wear clothes you do not mind dusting, bring sunglasses for grit, and expect to arrive back dirty. That is rather the point.
